An Evening with Cricket Legend Ian Botham

One of English Sports all time legends

From Football to Cricket to Charity Walks to a Knighthood to a Lifetime Peerage - No one has lived a life like Beefy!

Ian Botham, affectionately nicknamed Beefy, is one of the greatest and most charismatic players in English cricket history. Even in 2022, despite being in his 60s Sir Ian Botham has the same zest and passion for life that he displayed as a young man playing cricket for England

Perhaps the best all-rounder the game has ever seen, in his 102 Test matches Botham scored over 5000 runs, including 14 centuries, took 383 wickets, and 120 catches, He was also the fastest to the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets.

In the 1980s, Botham was the only genuine matchwinner England had in their side. Botham had an uncanny ability to turn a match single-handedly with bat or ball. In the 1981 Ashes series, he won two games in such fashion and many began referring to the series as Botham’s Ashes.

After an injury ended his sporting career – Botham turned his energy into charity walks, starting in 1985 and his most recent in 2017. It all began when Beefy was in the hospital recovering from his injury and discovered he shared a hospital with children suffering with leukaemia. This lit a spark under Botham and he walked from John O’Groats to Lands End in 1985 to raise funds and awareness of leukaemia

Beefy’s walks have taken him all around Britain, Ireland and even further afield as he challenged himself to replicate Hannibal’s walk across the alps, Sri Lanka walks and South Africa walks.

It’s hardly surprising that Beefy was knighted in 2007. His cricketing accomplishments were impressive enough, but his charitable work, which has raised over £25 million, is phenomenal. And to think, it all started because the great man trod on a cricket ball in 1977.

“When I first started pounding those roads there was roughly a 20 percent chance of survival from the disease but now, in some cases, that has risen to 85 percent,” Botham proudly said. 383 Test wickets and over 5,000 runs is one thing, but some figures are even more impressive than that
